Before Bortell’s was first created in 1976 by Bob and Helen Bortell, it was the old VFW, which had been vacant for years before they bought it. Prior to the VFW running it, the building was a Sundries Drug Store that had a luncheonette and candy counter.
On February 4th, 1977 Bortell’s Lounge first opened it’s doors to the public. It has been an island favorite for drinks, conversation, and watching sports for over 4 decades. There are stories about music great, Greg Allman coming in back in the day. Also, the Pittsburg Pirates hung out at Bortell’s for years when Willie Stargell and Dave Parker were on the team. St. Patty’s day was also a big day at Bort’s as Bob, the then owner would dress up like a leprechaun and serve corned beef and cabbage. Now, Bortell’s continues to be a place to enjoy all the island parades and festivities as it is located right on the party route!
Bortell’s was sold to Steve Rose back in 2016 knowing it would
need some renovations.
April 2018 Bortell's closed it’s doors for renovations.
Bortell's re-opened with a new look & we added food to our menu!
Come join us for a cold drink, delicious food, & good conversation.
